Sometimes I draw pictures for a series called "Goopy Lyramin," which entails a Lyra-pig confronted by and/or coated with various viscous or slimy substances. Here's a babysitting Lyra-pig.

About the Secret Life

The Secret Life of Guinea Pigs is inspired by my continuing admiration for the guinea pig. I was a lapsed artist: I grew up drawing and painting a great deal but I had somehow lost my spark over the years. My creative fires were rekindled several years ago when my wife Lyra started asking me for drawings of manatees and guinea pigs as little bedtime stories.

We used to have three little guys: Chumley, Sauce, and Wesley (all three deceased. RIP, tiny friends). Now we're petless for the time being.

My goals for this page are to create a kid-friendly and whimsical (but still funny to adults) place that expresses the imaginative potential of the world's greatest pet, the Guinea Pig.

Do you know what's in your guinea pig pellets? Pellets sold at stores like Petco and Petsmart contain mostly wheat and corn, even though they advertise themselves as "Alfalfa" or "Timothy hay" pellets. Guinea pigs do not need these things in their diet -- it actually can make them sick. (Research indicates that cereal-based pellets may contribute to the formation of bladder stones and other urinary tract problems. See here and here for more information about reducing the risk of these painful and life-threatening conditions in your favorite cavy friends.)

Do some research and find distributors of cereal-free pellets online. The Secret Life has had good results with products from Kleenmama's Hayloft and Oxbow Hay Co. Your guinea pig will thank you by giving you lots of nuzzles.
